When a suspect is apprehended and charged with a crime, there are various steps that should be taken. Building a strong defense strategy is one of the most important steps. This means understanding that a defendant should understand his or her rights and be fully of aware of the charges filed. This will allow the defendant to take the necessary steps to reduce or drop the charges against him or her.
Following a surveillance investigation and utilization of neighborhood tips for a four-month investigation of drug crimes, five people in the New York area were arrested. The city’s drug and crime tip line in Cohoes was used to determine who headed the drug organization and who worked with the 26-year-old to transport the drug throughout the city.
When the arrests were made, one defendant fled to New York City, but they were later apprehended and are currently awaiting extradition. The details of the crimes they are accused of were not reported at this time, but authorities charged the five defendants with the sale of a controlled substance.
When a defendant faces drug charges, they should understand the defense options. If they have co-defendants or multiple are arrested in connection with the same crime, a defendant might be able to make and agreement with prosecutors regarding the other defendants in the matter. Furthermore, the details of the arrest and any search conducted should be questioned. If an officer failed to properly conduct a search and seizure, that evidence could become inadmissible and some or all the charges could be reduced or dismissed.
Drug crimes can result in serious penalties such as hefty fines and jail time. Those facing such crimes should understand they are entitled to a defense. Investigating the arrest and crimes charged against them will help them device a strong defense. Moreover, seeking legal guidance will ensure their rights are protected.
