Do you understand the possible consequences of a speeding ticket?

On Behalf of | Jul 16, 2020 | Uncategorized |

Most people want to get to their destinations quickly. As a result, it is not uncommon for drivers to travel a few miles over the speed limit. However, even a few miles over the limit could result in a speeding ticket, and if officers believe that you were traveling at an excessive speed, the potential penalties for a ticket could be more severe.

From points on your driver record to possible jail time, a speeding ticket can lead to consequences that you should not just brush off. If an officer issues you a ticket, you may want to consider the possible repercussions and whether fighting the ticket could work in your favor.

What consequences could you face?

Officers tend to take speeding seriously because it is a significant factor in severe car accidents. Cracking down on speeding often happens in hopes of preventing as many of those accidents as possible. However, that could mean that you end up pulled over by a police officer and issued a ticket if an officer suspects you of speeding. If you do end up with a ticket, some of the repercussions could include the following:

  • A conviction for a traffic violation in New York could lead to points on your driving record. Up to 10 miles over the speeding limit could lead to three points on your record, whereas over 41 miles over the limit could result in 11 points.
  • A conviction would also result in financial penalties, including fines that could range from $90 to $600, depending on the circumstances. Less than 10 miles over the limit results in fines on the lower end of the spectrum, but speeding more than 31 miles over the limit could lead to a hefty fine of hundreds of dollars.
  • Jail time is even a possibility when it comes to a conviction for speeding. A judge could sentence you to up to 30 days in jail, even if it is a less common outcome.
  • Driver’s license suspension or revocation could also stem from a speeding ticket.

As you can see, a traffic ticket is not a matter you want to simply brush off. Instead, you may want to explore your legal options for defending against the allegations. Fortunately, you could work with an experienced attorney who could explain your options and help you work toward the most favorable outcome possible for your case.
