Pair found with more than 100 pounds of marijuana

The New York State Police have arrested a Binghamton pair after finding large quantities of drugs at a residence. According to NewYorkUpstate.com, Naami Islam and Melissa Pincus are facing several felony charges after a recent bust.

Search of car led them to a nearby home

The police stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on Murray Street in Binghamton. After pulling the car over, they discovered two pounds of marijuana in the car. The officers continued the investigation which led them to a nearby home.

After searching the residence, law enforcement officers discovered a large cache of drugs, paraphernalia and money. They uncovered:

  • 103 pounds of marijuana
  • 60 boxes of cannabis vapor cartridges
  • 224 canisters of medical marijuana
  • A small amount of cocaine
  • Paraphernalia and packaging
  • Money counter
  • $37,000

According to police, the marijuana confiscated was worth almost $500,000. Islam and Pincus were sent to the Broome County Jail without bail.

Despite New York state moving toward legalizing marijuana, it is still a crime to possess marijuana throughout much of the state. Anyone found with more than 10 pounds of marijuana is charged with a felony. If convicted, you face a sentence to up to 15 years in prison and significant fines.

Paraphernalia and drugs can equal distribution

If a person is also discovered with large amounts of cash, drug paraphernalia or other such items, he or she will likely also be charged with sale or distribution of a drug. This too is a felony charge, and it can involve serious jail time.

However, being charged with possession or distribution does not guarantee a conviction. You might be able to question the search or the evidence obtained against you. You may also be able to plead it down to a lesser charge. You might want to consider hiring an experienced criminal defense attorney who can advise you on your best defense against the charges.
