Man faces multiple offenses for DWI after stop, low-speed chase

Being arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated in New York can result in short and long-term problems that can negatively affect a person's life. Often, the person will make the mistake of compounding a traffic stop and DWI investigation by deciding to flee law enforcement. This can set the stage for worse penalties, if there is a conviction.

Recently, a man who allegedly passed-out behind the wheel of his car with his foot on the brake was arrested. The man, 26, was sitting in traffic, and he was slumped over the steering wheel. Officers knocked on the window to wake the man. After several tries, he woke up, and saw the officers. He then refused to comply with commands and tried to leave.

Authorities claimed that he then drove away in an erratic manner and at low-speed. Officers followed and the vehicle that hit a traffic delineator. As officers investigated, they found that the man was slurring his words, his eyes were bloodshot, he lacked coordination and his breath smelled of alcohol. He refused to submit to field sobriety tests, and was arrested for DWI, resisting arrest, driving recklessly, disorderly conduct and for committing traffic infractions.

It can be intimidating when law enforcement makes a traffic stop, and some drivers will make the mistake of trying to flee the scene. Adding refusal to submit to breathe tests makes matters worse. But, drivers should remember that they do have alternatives to defend against the charges. A conviction on DWI charges with fleeing and refusal can result in the loss of driving privileges, jail time, fines and more.
