Couple arrested for drug crimes, DUI and violating Leandra's Law

Drug addiction and the issues related to it are making news in New York State and across the nation with the accompanying problems that go along with it. People who are under the influence of drugs will frequently make mistakes as part of their alleged drug use, such as driving under the influence of drugs.

There can be other factors that make the situation worse, if there is a traffic stop and subsequent arrest. While illegal drug use can result in serious consequences, such as jail time, people who are arrested for drug crimes related not to its sale and distribution, but to its use might have options, such as a drug diversion program to avoid the harshest penalties. Regardless of the situation, having legal help is essential.

A man and a woman were arrested on drug charges and driving under the influence after a law enforcement investigation. According to the charges, the couple had snorted heroin, and then drove to a donut shop. They had a 6-year-old child in the car at the time.

Law enforcement was contacted when the couple was falling asleep in the establishment. When deputies arrived, they placed the couple under arrest. The child was the woman's niece and was said to be safe. The woman faces numerous charges, including child endangerment and aggravated DUI under Leandra's Law. The man also faces child endangerment charges.

People who have been arrested on drug charges have several avenues in which they can formulate a defense. The investigation itself might have been tainted. This is especially true in instances in which there was a traffic stop, and the officer might have violated procedures. Another option is to seek help to reduce charges. If the person is an addict and was not selling the drugs, this could be a palatable choice for the prosecution and the people who were arrested. No matter what, drug charges can have serious consequences and defense is key.

In this case, two people were not only arrested for driving while intoxicated, but they are also facing child endangerment charges and violations of Leandra's Law. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident. But since they were arrested and are confronted with these charges, they must craft a viable defense and explore all their alternatives. For that, a lawyer is crucial and should be contacted immediately.
