New York driver faces drug charges after traffic stop

Residents of New York understand that a traffic stop could have various results depending on chance and other factors. While it is common for the driver to face a citation for a traffic violation, drivers and even passengers could face more serious charges. If officers search the vehicle during a traffic stop, they might uncover evidence such as an illegal substance. This could lead to drug charges and much harsher penalties, which is why drivers should understand their rights in case the search and seizure process was conducted improperly. Devising a strong defense strategy could lead to reduced or even dropped charges.

Authorities in Hanover recently stopped a 27-year-old female driver for a traffic infraction. It wasn't reported what traffic violations she was accused of, but officers discovered that the driver had a suspended driving privileges in the state of New York. Deputies conducted a search and supposedly found Suboxone strips, narcotic pills and controlled prescriptions in improper containers.

The woman was placed under arrest and is facing both traffic charges and drug charges. In matters when traffic stops result in the search of a person or vehicle, it is crucial that drivers understand their rights regarding searches and seizures. If authorities fail to comply with the rules and do not conduct them properly, the evidence uncovered during the process could become inadmissible. This could lead to reduced or dismissed charges against the defendant.

Because drug charges often carry serious penalties, defendants should defend themselves against the charges they face. Those unsure of the defense process should seek guidance about the steps need to initiate and carry out their defense strategy. This will protect their rights while also keeping their best interests in mind.
