Cops claim New York man failed to cooperate during traffic stop

When drivers in New York are pulled over, they often think about the possible consequences they might face. A traffic stop will typically result in a simple citation for a traffic violation. Depending on how the stop progresses and what the police officer suspects, the driver could face harsher penalties such as a misdemeanor charge.

Following a routine traffic stop, state police in Schenectady recently arrested a 24-year-old man for a misdemeanor after he allegedly failed to cooperate with them. According to the police, the man was stopped on Interstate 890 for violating the seat belt law. When the officer requested the man's driver's license, the young man allegedly refused to comply. Furthermore, police claim the man would not identify himself to the state trooper, and he allegedly would not get out of his vehicle when asked to for a further interview.

Instead of just being issued a citation for not wearing a seatbelt, the driver was taken into custody and charged with obstructing governmental administration and disorderly conduct. He was fingerprinted so he could be identified.

Drivers should know that they are entitled to a defense against misdemeanor charges. Even in the penalties are not as severe as a felony, drivers should be aware that the consequences can still greatly affect them. In order to develop a defense strategy against the pending charges, a driver should ensure he or she is well informed about their situation. Seeking advice from an experienced defense attorney could help ensure their rights are protected and they have a chance to tell their side of the story.
