US Route 219 in New York is a speeding ticket risk

Many drivers know that there are certain areas that police patrol more heavily for speeding, and some say that police set up “speed traps” to catch drivers in some places. New York drivers usually can name many such areas. A particular stretch of U.S. Route 219 has become infamous for the number of speeding tickets that police issue in the area. New York residents should be aware of the location of the spot along U.S. Route 219 where police issue the most speeding tickets as well as the penalties drivers face if issued a speeding ticket.

Highest area for speeding fines in two counties

The one-mile stretch of U.S. Route 219 running through Limestone and into the town of Carrollton grossed more than $301,000 in speeding fines in 2012, according to a report issued by the New York State Comptroller’s Office. The state kept $220,015 of the proceeds, the town got $75,735 and the county collected $5,300. The area represents the highest amount of money for speeding citations in Cattaraugus or Allegany counties.

Many drivers cite the fact that the speed limit drops from 55 mph to 40 mph as it runs through Carrollton as the reason the stretch of road sees so many people exceeding the speed limit. Some drivers argue that the road is a speed trap. Police admitted that many of the drivers who receive speeding tickets in the area are from out of state or Canada and are unaware of the sudden drop in the speed limit.

Fines for speeding violations

Those who receive speeding tickets in New York face fines and other penalties. The fines for speeding vary based on how many miles per hour faster than the speed limit the driver was travelling:

  • Up to 10 miles over: $90 to $150
  • Over 10 miles but less than 30 miles over: $180 to $300
  • 30 miles and over: $360 to $600

Drivers also accrue penalty points on their driving records when they receive citations for speeding. Much like the fines, the number of points a driver gets for a speeding ticket varies with how much faster than the speed limit the driver was travelling:

  • One to 10 miles over: three points
  • 11 to 20 miles over: four points
  • 21 to 30 miles over: six points
  • 31 to 40 miles over: eight points
  • More than 40 miles over: 11 points

Drivers who accumulate 11 points on their records within an 18 month period face driver’s license suspension.
