Are red light cameras coming to Newburgh?

Drivers in Newburgh may need to pay closer attention to the way they drive in the community. If authorities have their way red light cameras will be installed in various intersections throughout the area. According to Newburgh police officers at least twelve intersections are dangerous and should therefore be outfitted with the electronic device.

The cameras, which are installed at an intersection, are designed to capture identifying information from automobiles that rather than stop at a red light, continue through it. That information is then used to contact the owner of the vehicle and hold that person responsible for that traffic violation, usually via a traffic ticket. Sometimes a photo of the vehicle engaged in the activity is sent as well.

As is the case with other traffic tickets, it may be possible to contest the ticket. Depending on the circumstances, such as if someone else was behind the wheel of one's vehicle, this may be a good idea. If one has accumulated many points on his or her license, this is particularly true. As a result of accumulating a certain amount of points on a license someone could be assessed a fine, face higher insurance rates or even lose their driver's license all together. Accordingly, those facing a traffic violation may benefit from working with a lawyer who handles such cases.

The desire to install the cameras does not mean that their addition is a foregone conclusion however. Because under current New York state law a city must have a population of at least one million to install the electronics, Newburgh does not qualify. In an effort to get the camera, a County Legislator is planning to petition the Governor to have the law changed.
