Speed cameras to be erected at locations in New York City

A new tool designed to help keep New York City drivers from speeding recently became part of a law set to take effect at the end of this month, on August 31. The law enables the installation of speed monitoring cameras at certain locations. The available cameras are slated to be placed throughout the city in areas where signs indicate it is a lower speed. The addition of the cameras is a bit of a test. It is being called a pilot program and is slated to continue for a total of five years. During this time information regarding the matter will be collected.

If the speed cameras work, it is always possible that other locations in the state could adopt something similar.

Through the use of the cameras, police officers will be able to issue summons to individuals who are driving too fast. Each summons costs $50. In an effort to provide school children with extra protection the cameras will be located at schools.

This is, of course, not the first time that laws seeking to keep individuals safe from traffic accidents have been developed. According to Mayor Bloomberg, who supported Governor Cuomo in signing the bills, other approaches have resulted in a drop in the number of fatalities reported. Whether this pilot adds to that success remains to be seen.

In the meantime, New York residents who are caught by the camera speeding will need to continue to defend themselves, in this case against the city's Parking Violation Bureau. Though a ticket here or there will likely not have much of an impact on one's ability to drive, a culmination of tickets may make it expensive to do so. In an effort to keep points on the license to a small number, many will probably work with a lawyer to have the matter resolved.
