Increase in license points for texting while driving in NY

To many, points are just something that opposing basketball teams accumulate against each other in the course of a game. Residents of the state of New York understand that word can have a financial impact on them as well. This is true when someone is using the word in relation to traffic tickets. The accumulation of a certain amount of points translates into higher auto insurance premiums. This is something many drivers cannot afford.

Because this is true, drivers who are texting while operating a vehicle should be aware of a recent change in the way points are doled out in the state of New York. Individuals caught doing the activity will now receive 5 points on their license instead of 3. Readers of this blog may remember that the number of points was increased just last year from 2 to 3. The change took effect on June 1 and was announced by the state's governor at a press conference regarding the matter late last month.

Texting while driving is a problem throughout the nation, including in the state of New York. This is in part illustrated by the number of tickets law enforcement gives regarding the matter. While a change made in 2012 making texting while driving a primary offence certainly has had an impact on the number of cases of this happening, the number has nonetheless soared. In 2011 officers ticketed 3,500 individuals for the activity. The following year that number increased to 30,000.
